Concerns over appointment process of 500 Grade R teachers in KZN
The National Teachers' Union says the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education Mbali Frazer needs to provide a clear criteria that the department will use to employ the 500 Grade R teachers next year.
This comes as concerns arose after Frazer revealed that she will use funds currently used to fund Covid-19 screeners for the appointment of the first 500 qualified Grade R educators to permanent posts from April 2023.

The union says there are over 4 000 qualified Grade R teachers that need to be converted to permanent staff.
NATU President Sibusiso Malinga says this is worrying because it seems nepotism will be used.
"We are worried because we don't know how they reached 500. How are they going to identify those 500 [teachers] that will benefit? So it is a challenge on its own."

"This issue of qualification and how they are going to be chosen and also the issue of the majority of them not getting benefits and some will get benefits. So it doesn't sit well with teachers."
