This follows the killing of three people in Mpola outside Pinetown this week.

The department’s Thando Biyela says preliminary police indicate that four heavily armed gunmen entered the Phungula household on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspects opened fire, killing the husband, wife and their neighbour.

Another family member was also rushed to the hospital.

Biyela says the MEC has been in talks with police to discuss the number of killings in the province.

"A part of our plan to prevent and combat crime is centred around intelligence-driven operations. We are focusing on profiling criminal hotspots. Police are closing the net on all criminal elements during the festive season and beyond. Once more we appeal to community members to play an  active role and fight the scourge of crime."

Mariannhill authorities say they are yet to make arrests in connection with a triple murder in the area this week
