Security guards hurt in KZN cash-in-transit heist

Three security guards are receiving treatment following a cash-in-transit heist near Greytown yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the brazen heist on the R33 at around 3.30pm.

Police say armed robbers opened fire at the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.

National spokesperson, Vish Naidoo says a group of armed men in two vehicles attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle by firing shots at it, causing it to veer off the road.

"They then used explosives to open up the vehicle. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash," he said.

ER24 says it is understood the guards were hurt when their vehicle overturned.

Medics say they sustained minor injuries and managed to get out of the vehicle when it came to a stop.

They were not hurt when the explosives were detonated, ER24 said in a statement.
