Concern around safety as tree felling leaves one motorist dead in Westville
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Questions are being asked about whether or not sufficient safety measures were in place on a Westville road where a man was killed after a tree that was being felled crushed his car.
Emergency personnel say the local dentist had been driving on Essex Terrace when one of the large trees that were being cut fell on his car.
It's unclear at this stage whether there had been adequate road safety measures in place at the time and how the vehicle managed to be in the area when the tree came down.
Andrew Plint owns a tree felling company in the Durban area that was not involved in Saturday's incident.

He says there are certain safety precautions that need to be put in place when trees are being felled especially in residential areas.
"You do get tree felling warning signs. Generally just any sort of danger tape and coned off areas, red flags and obviously just efficient enough to allow for any brunches to fall," he said.
Police have been unavailable for comment on the incident and about the type of case that has been opened.
