Concern around ambulance hijackings
Updated | By Nushera Sooodylal
Emergency services say they are concerned by the number of attempted hijackings on ambulances in recent months.
The latest incident took place in Ntuzuma, north of Durban, last night, when two paramedics and a patient were lucky to escape four armed men who tried to stop their vehicle.
It is alleged that they had picked up a patient from Ntuzuma E Section and had been driving along Access Road, when they were approached by the suspects.
The driver of the ambulance noticed the suspects in his rear-view mirrors and reacted swiftly to get away.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says the value of one of these ambulances are a major attraction for criminals:
"Obviously there's a lot of equipment inside the ambulance - as well as the fact that it's a Toyota Quantum," Jamieson says, "He raced away from the incident and managed to evade any sort of altercation with the robbers. The matter was reported to the SAPS, who did patrol the area".
No case has been opened as yet.
