The uMshwathi Local Municipality has added it's been assisting the affected families during the painful process of identifying their loved ones.

Two men and 10 women, one of whom was pregnant, lost their lives in the collision between a tanker and a minibus taxi at the Wartburg turn-off on the R33.

The municipality's Sibusiso Mkhithi says most of the victims have been positively identified. He accompanied their families to the mortuary:

"All of them tears are falling down, it's terrible," he said.

"It's a bad mood, some said that the deceased were breadwinners so they really do not know what's going to happen from now on. It's terrible."

Mkhithi says the victims were local community members.

"The information we received is that the taxi was driving from Mpolweni in Ward 10 under uMshwathi going to Pietermaritzburg. Most of the members said the deceased were going to work and some were going to town."

KZN authorities are still searching for the driver of a tipper truck, who allegedly failed to observe a stop sign which might have caused the accident.
