The Moerane Commission of Inquiry has adjourned for about a month after resuming public hearings at the beginning of this week.

This as evidence leader Advocate Bhekhi Manyathi told reporters a witness who'd been due to testify today withdrew at the last minute.
The witness - who requested to remain anonymous for fear of his life - had been expected to testify in camera this morning but had a change of heart.

Manyathi says the development is a major setback.
"After we had adjourned the sitting yesterday, I had contact with the witness and it turned out that he would no longer attend this morning. So he did not attend. In short, we did not have any evidence that was led this morning," he said.

The commission - which is probing political killings in KZN - briefed the media this afternoon following its inspection in loco at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.

More than 80 people have been killed, with some of the murders thought to have been politically-motivated.
A few hostel dwellers who spoke to Newswatch earlier said they live in constant fear at the crime-ridden hostel.
