Commercial flights resume at Richards Bay Airport

Commercial flights to and from the Richards Bay Airport in northern KZN will resume on Tuesday morning.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority was forced to downgrade the airport on Friday over fire safety concerns. 


At the time, Airlink confirmed it had suspended its flights to and from Johannesburg.


uMhlathuze officials say a gearbox mechanical failure occurred in the main Rescue Fire Fighting Response Vehicle.

The municipality's Bongani Gina says it's a specialised vehicle used at airports and cannot be substituted.


"The challenge with this was that the truck that broke could only be fixed by certain mechanics from the manufacturing company, which is based in Germany. But this incident has taught us as a municipality a number of ways how to deal with a similar problem in the future. 


“With the restoration of the appropriate firefighting capabilities, the airport has resumed normal operations and has reverted to category five status."
