Cogta says not considering taking over embattled Msunduzi
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
The National Cooperative Governance Department says it has no plans to take over the running of the troubled Msunduzi Municipality.
Ratepayers have called on national government to step in.
The Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics has long been complaining about poor service delivery in the city.
A year ago, the association was considering taking legal action, saying the lack of services was impacting the lives of residents as well as the running of businesses.
It says the provincial government has failed Pietermaritzburg residents and wants the situation to be turned around.
Msunduzi has been under administration since 2019.

A week ago, administrator Scelo Duma resigned.
The department’s spokesperson Lungi Mtshali says they are not considering taking over the municipality at this stage.
"We are looking at other ways of supporting the municipality and the provincial Cogta in this regard.
"First prize is to assist the municipality to allow locals to run their own affairs and we provide support at provincial and at local government levels.
"We are really trying to ensure that this administration is being supported by not only Cogta at a national level, but by all departments."
