A slain councillor's family and friends have called on community members in Pietermaritzburg's Imbali township to take a stand against crime.

This after Msunduzi's Mabhungu Mkhize was gunned down by suspects over a week ago, becoming the nineteenth councillor to be killed in the province in a year since September last year.
The ward 14 councillor was travelling home from a council meeting with a friend Muzikhona Dlongolo when they were attacked.
Speaking at his funeral on Sunday, Mkhize's father said he was shocked when he heard the news about his son's death on the radio.

"I first heard on the radio about a councillor that was killed in Ward 14. The newsreader then later came back with more details saying my son was the victim of the shooting. I completely went numb, I couldn't stand, I was confused. My son’s passing has left a dent in the family. I'm completely heartbroken.”
He said the family's lost a loving son and father.
Meanwhile, three suspects arrested in connection with Mkhize's murder have abandoned their bid for bail.
Sithembiso Gqirashe, Minenhle Mkhulise, and Lulekwa Ntombela all appeared at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Gqirashe and Mkhulise are also facing charges of being in possession of illegal firearms and live ammunition.
