The old racecourse site is being developed into a logistics park.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance says it'll argue in the Durban High Court that the project will eliminate the area's last green lung, reduce recreational space, increase road pollution and negatively affect bio-diversity.

Desmond D'Sa says the safety of children is their main concern.

"Trucks are travelling in and out of that area. We are concerned about the thousands of school children that commute from outside townships - coming to Merebank, Wentworth and the Bluff and merge at the M4. That area is a dead zone. We are concerned that there'll be over 200 trucks and vehicles while kids in the morning are coming at peak hour," he says.

The Fortress Income Fund said previously that the R3.5-billion investment includes R110-million that'll be spent on upgrades to roads and infrastructure around the facility.

It says this will improve road safety - especially around nearby schools. The site will also reportedly include a rehabilitated wetland.
