The taxi industry and operators have welcomed eThekwini's plan to sanitise some 5 000 buses and taxis every day, for the next two months.

It's part of the eThekwini Transport Authority's efforts to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 on public transport vehicles.
The programme was launched on Friday.
Vehicles at the Bridge City taxi rank in KwaMashu will be sanitised today.

Programme manager, Sifiso Mthethwa says this will happen at night, "The programme is going well so far. The vehicles will be sanitized after 6pm when they’re done ferrying commuters so that in the morning they’ll be ready for work again.
"The Municipality has even started a programme of tracing any commuters who tested positive or who were a contact," he adds.
Sifiso Shangase who's with taxi Council, Santaco in KZN, says with eThekwini being a COVID-19 hotspot, the programme came at the right time.
