Child support grant ‘vital’ to welfare system, says Zulu
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu says the Child Support Grant Top-Up announced on Monday is a vital component of the state’s welfare system.
This after the department found that a number of families lost parents due to Covid-19 and other illnesses during the pandemic.
The Child Support allowance was increased by R240 to R720 per child each month as of June.
Zulu says the previous amount was not adequate in light of the cost of living and the amount of job losses by caregivers during the pandemic.

Briefing the country on Social Development Month and the Social Relief of Distress grant on Monday, Zulu said government always puts the poorest of the poor first.
"Having done an analysis again of what that money does for - that money goes for the basics, just for people to put bread on the table, but also to make sure that their livelihoods are kept.
"We announced the top-up of the child support grant having done some research in realising that the R420 was not adequate and as the Department of Social Development, we are also conscious of the fact that food prices always rise at all times."
