Chikane admits anger at state of the country

Reverend Frank Chikane says he's angry about the state of the country.

Frank Chikane

"I am angry that the struggle we waged and that people paid so much for it.

"People died, people were tortured and when we did so, we did not expect that this country will be the way it is. That's not what we struggled for."

The struggle stalwart's been speaking on the eve of the State of the Nation Address, at an event hosted by the Defend our Democracy coalition in Cape Town.

The group, which comprises organisations including the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the SACP, has called on South Africans to organise to save the country.

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says we shouldn't be looking at the state of our nation but the state of our democracy.

She was the keynote speaker at the event.

"We know that the lack of social justice caused the first and second world war. That is why we had the treaty, the UN charter and more recently the UN sustainability development cause because global leaders who are smart know that inequality or injustice, peace can not coexist."
