Chatsworth police -  who have confirmed the attack - say the assault happened on Friday.

Chairman of the Community Policing Forum, Jakes Singh says it appears teacher was confronted after a complaint by a learner.

"The parents now fear for the children's safety after a teacher at the school allegedly hit a child on the back of his head with a book during a school lesson. After the assault, the teacher was approached by the child's father and a gang of men assaulted him," he says.

Sadtu's Nomarashiya Caluza says the school is currently closed as teachers fear for their lives.

"As Sadtu in KZN, we are so concerned with violence taking place in our schools. That incident where a teacher was attacked by a gang was uncalled for, teachers no longer feel safe in schools," she says.

KZN police say while no one is in custody yet, they are hopeful arrests will be made soon.

Provincial education officials say they weren't aware of the incident when Newswatch contacted them earlier.
