The driver of a rollback truck lost control on a bend on Umhlathuzane Road and slammed into four schoolchildren aged between six and nine.

The vehicle overturned and came to rest on its roof.

Two children and the driver died at the scene.

"I can confirm that the critically injured little boy, believed to be nine or 10, from the horrendous collision has passed away in hospital. His injuries were too severe," says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

"This brings the number of deceased to four, with three of them being young children that were on their way through to school. One other young little boy is being treated in hospital, still in a stable condition."

Ward 65 councillor Samantha Windvogel was at the scene with some of the children's parents.

"It was really sad. The saddest thing is to hear the cries of the parents having to come and identify their children. It was really heartbreaking."
