Chatsworth activist gunned down, off-duty metro cop killed in Umlazi

The Chatsworth community has expressed shock following the death of a well-known resident and former policeman.

Seelan Pillay was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting outside a fast food shop on Lenny Naidu Drive in the Bayview area on Saturday morning.


The father of three and community activist was declared dead on scene with his funeral taking place at the Mobeni Heights Cemetery on Monday.

Community activist Visvin Reddy says the community has lost one of its heroes.


"The community is once again shocked at the callous killing. These types of killings have been quite common in the Chatsworth area. We've had drive-by killings and up to today, we don't know really what are the forces that's behind this." 


Meanwhile, eThekwini Metro police have confirmed the murder of one of its officers, Xolani Cele, who was gunned down in Umlazi's M-section on Saturday night. 


According to police reports the off-duty 42-year-old was shot while seated in his vehicle waiting for his friend.

"Inspector Cele was gunned down over the weekend. Cele had a very good work ethic. He was exemplary when carrying out his duties. 


"His colleagues as well as management, are devastated and in shock over his murder," says spokesperson Geraldine Stevens.
