Pikoli first brought the charges against Zuma in 2005 but was later sacked.

He's been commenting after current NPA boss, Shaun Abrahams announced his decision to prosecute Zuma yesterday.

"This decision is actually a victory for our constitutional democracy and our rule of law," said Pikoli.

He says it is long overdue.

"Although it has been delayed for some time, finally the matter will be before our courts."

The charges relate to the 783 payments Zuma allegedly received in connection with the controversial multi-billion Rand arms deal.

Abrahams said that a trial court is the most appropriate forum for the issues to be decided upon.

"I am of the view that there are reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution of Mr. Zuma on the charges listed in the indictment," he said.

Political analyst, Sanusha Naidu agrees with Pikoli that the decision to charge Zuma is long overdue.

She says the move also sets a legal precedent.
