Charges withdrawn against Booysen, co-accused
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
All charges against former KZN Hawks head, General Johan Booysen and his 26 co-accused have been formally withdrawn in the Durban High Court.
The group from the now disbanded Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crimes Unit - were arrested in 2012 for their alleged involvement in the so-called 'Cato Manor' death squad.
Last week NPA head, Shamila Batohi announced that a panel she had appointed to review the previous decisions to prosecute the group - recommended that the authorisations by former acting NPA head, Nomgcobo Jiba and former national director, Shaun Abrahams were invalid.
But a review is underway and individual officers could be charged for cases of housebreaking and murder - among other things.

The NPA's Natasha Kara addressed reporters outside court.
"The docket regarding the predicate offences will be sent to the acting DPP in KZN. She will then have to study that docket and make a decision on those offences," Kara said.
Speaking outside court, Booysen said they were targeted because of who they were investigating.
