Cele ‘deeply concerned’ about increase in child murders

The Police Minister says he's deeply concerned about the increase in child murders.

Bheki Cele says while the latest [quarterly] crime statistics show a decline in the number of women and children killed, they reveal that many of them aren't safe around the people that they know and trust.
[Addressing a media briefing yesterday] Cele says the majority of crimes against children occurred in their homes, where they are supposed to be safe.

"Children have not been spared from brutal attacks and abuse."
"293 children were killed between July to September 2023."
"In the same period, 361 incidents of attempted murder and 1820 of GBH were perpetrated against children. Over 1500 reports of attempted murder of women were made between July and September.
More than 14,000 women were the victims of assault in cases of gender-based violence.
