Cape Town man arrested after R6.3 million drug bust

A 30-year-old Cape Town man has been arrested for possession of drugs worth more than R6.3 million.

The Hawks say he was nabbed after officers tracked a container ship from Europe at Cape Town Harbour.


Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase says the container was loaded with ecstasy powder and tablets - which were hidden within a consignment of furniture.


"The joint team tracked a container shipment loaded with MDMA (ecstasy powder) worth an estimated R6.3 million and ecstasy tablets valued of R70 000 concealed within a consignment of furniture at Cape Town Harbour."

The Hawks also confiscated of hydroponic cannabis at the man's Durbanville house.


"This shipment was allegedly destined for a residence in Durbanville from Europe. During the search at the house the joint team confiscated approximately 1 kg of Hydroponic Cannabis with an estimated street value of R120 000 as well as equipment used for the cultivation of Hydroponic Cannabis."

Meanwhile, seven men are behind bars after apparently being caught with boxes of illicit cigarettes and other counterfeit goods.


KwaZulu-Police say they were tipped off about the group's activities.


They were nabbed in Hluhluwe last night while transporting the goods - said to have a street value of nearly a million rand.


Authorities say one of the suspects tried to bribe officers - offering them R100 000. He now also faces a charge of bribery.


Police say the group has also been charged for contravening the Immigration Act.
