Cancer deaths probe: Inquiry must establish medical negligence - police

KZN police say they'll complete their inquiry into the deaths of cancer patients first before a decision is taken on an investigation.

"We had to open an inquiry to investigate the allegations. If there's something that we find, then we'll take it from there," she says. 

The DA went to Durban police this week with the hopes of opening a case of culpable homicide - bringing around 300 charges against our Health MEC and national minister of Health. 

The party was told though that a police inquiry will be launched first.

Should the initial probe uncover evidence linking these deaths to negligence on the part of health officials - an official investigation will be opened.  

The police's Thembeka Mbhele explains why the inquiry is necessary. 

"They say there are more than 300 bodies because of negligence. We need to get proof that people died because of negligence in the hospital," she says. 

A damning report revealed that the provincial Health Department had violated the rights of cancer patients to treatment.
