The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education is concerned for the safety of key role-players within the sector.
The committee has been commenting after NATU's Allen Thompson was ambushed near Umhlanga last week.
The union's deputy president was shot north of Durban on Friday afternoon.
Thompson was able to drive himself to a nearby hospital where the suspects allegedly stole documents, laptops and cash from his vehicle.
"He is a teacher and the leader of a union. For us to see a leader being attacked - It has to be a concern to us. We are calling upon law enforcement to make sure that they find out why was Mr. Thomspon attack and what was the cause. We are all interested to hear," Committee chairperson, Nomalungelo Gina said.
