Community members in Lamontville, south of Durban, are calling on Ward councillors to intervene after service delivery protests turned violent this week.

Residents from the Madlala informal settlement demonstrated over the removal of illegal electricity connections and service delivery.

A local resident - who does not want to be named - says families who live in formal houses have been left frustrated by the violence and unrest.
"Where are the councillors? Where are people who are supposed to be looking after the responsibilities of the community? They are nowhere to be seen when there are problems.
"They need to come forward and answer, because if you live in a house and people start building shacks in your backyard, definitely that should be people that you know.
"No one can just come into your backyard and build a house, that's highly impossible. Call the councillors and please assist us before people get hurt," the resident says.
