Calls to ban school outings after death of Enoch Mpianzi

There have been calls to tighten the rules and regulations around school trips and excursions.

NAPTOSA's been responding to requests by some people that school outings be banned. 


It's after the tragic death of Enoch Mpianzi a grade eight pupil, who drowned last week during a river rafting exercise at an orientation camp hosted by his school, Parktown Boys' High.

The child's family, who's met with the SA Human Rights Commission wants the school to be accountable, claiming negligence. 


NAPTOSA's Basil Manuel says while excursions are an important part of a child's education, schools need to ensure that the rules are followed.

"There are hundreds of these activities that happen, and they happen without any problems because people do take precautions. I will guarantee you that the schooling in questions has a lot of rules in place, to ensure that this doesn't happen."


"But of cause, it depends and goes down to the lowest common denominator. That is everybody follows the rules precisely," he says.
