Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Department of Cooperative Governance in KZN
has called on the speaker of Newcastle Municipality to investigate an alleged
racist remark made by a DA ward councillor.

The department's been reacting to a leaked voice note, said to have been recorded last year.
Connie Hariram can be heard questioning why Thandeka Mhlanga, who is a black woman, had been elected into the ward 3 committee which is predominantly an Indian residential ward.
Cogta says for a public representative the comments are distasteful and inappropriate.
DA provincial spokesperson Sithembiso Ngema says they have taken action.

"The councillor in question has admitted guilt and expressed remorse. The DA will now consider the investigation outcome along with the admission made by the councillor."
