Cabinet: Newly elected officials ‘must keep true to their electoral pledges’
Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele has called on newly elected officials to keep their electoral pledges and serve the people.
Gungubele briefed the media on the outcomes of the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
He spoke as South Africans were waiting for the official announcement of the final local government elections results on Thursday evening.
Gungubele applauded all South Africans who cast their vote on Monday.
“We applaud the tolerance, dignity and patience with which the voters conducted themselves throughout election day.
"The smooth way in which political parties contested the local government elections and the emergence of young candidates, especially women, is testament to our vibrant and functioning democracy,” he said.
Gungubele also commended the IEC for holding peaceful elections.
“Cabinet commended the Electoral Commission of South Africa, all political parties, members of society and the law-enforcement agencies in the country for their collective efforts to ensure the peaceful elections.
“Cabinet reminded all South Africans to strengthen our democracy by actively participating in forums and institutions which hold those elected to account.
"It called on newly elected officials to keep true to their electoral pledges, and to serve all people equally and fairly.”
