It's understood they'd been digging for sand when the tragedy happened.

Distraught and shocked family of the nine-year-old and 12-year-old boys watched on as search and rescue officials pulled out the bodies of their children from the hole, just metres from both their homes.

It took rescuers about half-an-hour to retrieve the bodies with a stokes basket - before carrying them to the mortuary van.

Their families say the children were paid five rand each to help a neighbour to dig up sand for building his home.

The man had gone off to offload some of the material when the two-meter deep hole caved in and buried them.

The man is said to have alerted the families about what had happened and then disappeared.
