Bluff Ratepayers Association unconvinced by mayor’s service delivery promises

While the eThekwini mayor believes a meeting with the Bluff Ratepayers Association was fruitful, the association says it's disappointed and concerned for the future of their area.

Residents sat down with Mxolisi Kaunda to discuss issues plaguing Bluff and Merebank on Tuesday evening.

These include service delivery, water, and land invasion.

This morning on East Coast Radio Breakfast, Kaunda said it was a successful meeting.

"Deliberations were honest deliberations. We were not in denial as the city, but we were able to put a detailed plan as to what constitutes our response especially procuring jetting machines, honey suckers and blockade vehicles to clear out main holes in all these areas."

He said the city will give residents feedback soon.

But the vice-chairperson of the BRA, Allison Schoeman, says Kaunda's address shows a lack of comprehension of the dire state of the Durban south area.

"A short drive from any home reveals the extent of the decay and neglect, yet we heard about the plans for a fancy mariner. These feel like out-of-touch dreams when grappling with basic operational funding.

"So, we are concerned that the mayor is not understanding the severity of what we are facing. While these ambitious projects are exciting, they are unrealistic when our city is struggling financially."

Schoeman said among the pressing issues is the lack of by-law enforcement.

"The mayor again promised the 400 additional metro offices, and we see that as a positive step, but there were no specifics, specifically for the area like the Bluff.

"We hardly ever see any law enforcement, spotting a metro police officer is like waiting for Christmas to come."
