The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs launched its 'KZN is Summer' campaign at the weekend.

Nine KZN beaches have received Blue Flag status for the 2017/18 Blue Flag Season, which gets underway tomorrow.

Seven of the beaches are in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality on the south coast.

The municipality's Simon April says they have partnered with the department to help grow tourism in the region.

"Those are Marina beach, Trafalgar beach, Lucien beach, Southport beach, Umzumbe beach, Ramsgate beach and Hibberdene. What is very important about this, is we have this status for 365 days," he said.

Two eThekwini beaches have also received Blue Flag status.

The province's coastline is a popular holiday destination for local and international tourists.
