Blood bank urges donors to come forward

The South African National Blood Service says a number of factors have meant potential donors have had to be turned away before they could give the gift of life.

The province is currently facing another critical blood shortage.

The blood bank says it currently has a 24-hour reserve for the whole of KwaZulu-Natal.

Spokesperson, Sifiso Khoza says at any given time there should be upwards of five days stock available.

“Donors have been coming forward, but a lot of people have been turned away – mainly for their iron levels and other people have been sick with the weather conditions,” said Khoza.

Khoza says the number of people coming to their centres and mobile collection clinics have been good, but they have not been able to take the required number of units.
