Bird flu outbreak 'waning' - Poultry Association
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The SA Poultry
Association says the bird flu outbreak is waning.
"We look at the past two weeks in terms of the cases that have been reported, there has been a slight decline and spread of the outbreak," says the group's General Manager Abongile Balarane.
He says the outbreak has affected poultry farmers nationwide, including five in KZN.
Millions of chickens on commercial farms have had to be culled while the price of eggs skyrocketed in recent months.
The Agriculture Department has greenlighted the importation of eggs and poultry meat to ensure a sufficient supply before the festive season.

Balarane says biosecurity measures have helped control the spread of the disease.
He wants South Africa to also reach out to its neighbours for help.
"We are also calling to the government to speed up the opening to some of the southern countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi, Angola and Namibia so we can export from them."
