Bathing around Ohlange not safe

eThekwini Municipality has urged the public to refrain from any bathing activities near the Ohlange estuary mouth, north of Durban.

The estuary, lagoon and the beach remain closed.
It’s after the UPL warehouse in Cornubia was torched during the 2021July unrest.

It caused a chemical spill that contaminated the Ohlange River and Umhlanga Lagoon.
"Only 1km on either side of the lagoon is closed and not the entire beach," says eThekwini spokesperson Mandla Nsele.
"We pleading with members of the public to refrain from any beach activities in the vicinity of Ohlange River until the water quality is deemed safe."
