Basa wants reduction in beer tax
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Beer Association of South Africa's trying to convince the government that its products shouldn't be taxed as much as other alcoholic beverages.
It says the sector's contracted some 30% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It made its case for the easing of taxes before Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance this week.
Basa's Patricia Pillay says compared with other alcoholic drinks, beer contains less alcohol by volume.
"Beer at five percent alcohol by volume has the lowest alcohol level when compared to other alcoholic products.
"Yet despite its reduced alcohol by volume compared to other products and the major economic impact of the sector's value chain, beer has suffered serious bias with regards to excises duties."
