Emergency services say the woman, believed to be about six months pregnant, was struck by a car while allegedly trying to cross the freeway near Ballito on the north coast.

The woman had been walking with her husband at the time.

IPSS Medical Rescue says the woman was declared dead at the scene due to the severe injuries she sustained.

A spokesperson says her husband was not hurt in the crash. The motorist sustained minor injuries.

Both north and southbound carriageways were affected by crash debris strewn across the roadway.

Meanwhile, a pregnant woman was killed in a separate incident south of Durban, also last night.

She was struck by a car on the N2 near Umgababa near Amanzimtoti.

The 18-year-old was knocked over while also allegedly crossing the road.

In a third incident, a man in his twenties was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the N3 near Westville.

Rescue Care says the man was found lying next to the vehicle on the Pinetown-bound lanes. The car had overturned and came to a rest on its roof.

Medics say the man was in a critical condition. Advanced life support paramedics tried to stabilise him but he went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

It is still unclear what caused the vehicle to overturn.
