Bail application continues for Verulam man accused of murder
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Arguments will be heard from the State and defence today on whether a 26-year-old Hammonds Farm man, accused of raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl, should be granted bail.
The child was stabbed to death in June, at the block of flats at which she and the accused both lived.
The Umhlanga call centre agent was initially only charged with murder. A charge of rape was added at his last appearance before the Verulam Magistrate's Court.
The State's opposing bail and the investigating officer's given evidence that there's a strong case against the accused.
He says two children say they saw the accused carrying the victim's body out of his home, that afternoon - and that her clothes were found in a KFC packet, in the accused's kitchen bin.

The accused, however, maintains his innocence. He says he was at his local supermarket buying dinner, that afternoon.
The case has been set down for arguments today and there could be a ruling on whether or not the accused is granted bail, this afternoon.
