On Sunday night, Babes, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, took to social media to share a video of a man alleged to be her partner hitting her.

Mandla 'Mampintsha' Maphumulo has since been arrested and charged with common assault.

He made a brief appearance in court yesterday afternoon and was granted R2000 bail.  Speaking at a press briefing, Babes' father thanked South Africans for their support during this time.

"We want to thank the broader South African community and leaders of various political parties, artists, the media and all South Africans for the support given to our daughter at this time. Your messages of support went a long way to put a smile on the face of our daughter, Babes," Simelane said.

He also had this message for parents.

"We wish to pass strong words of support to parents whose children could be going or have gone through similar experiences. Please continue to support them without passing judgement on their characters."
