ATM President Vuyo Zungula says their urgent court application follows the refusal by Speaker of Parliament, Thandi Modise, to allow Members of Parliament (MPs) to vote by means of a secret ballot.

“We’ll be at the Western Cape High Court, the purpose of us going to court is because we don’t agree with the Speaker’s decision to decline the motion to be voted by secret ballot.

“We are seeking for the court to intervene, because the previous court ruling of the conditions that need to be there for the ballot to be secret, we believe they are prevalent now as we speak. Therefore, our view is that the motion needs to be voted by way of a secret ballot,” says Zungula.

The ATM, which only has two seats in parliament, first tabled the motion in February; however, it was delayed due to disruptions by the outbreak of Covid-19.

Political analysts do not expect the motion to succeed, labelling it as “frivolous”.
