Arrests in Durban pitch invasion increase to nine

Police have now tracked down nine suspects in total in connection with the violent pitch invasion at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last month.

Two people appeared in the city's magistrate court after handing themselves over to police yesterday. 

SAPS spokesperson, Jay Naicker says 29-year-old Nolwethu Cokutha and 27-year-old Zibongile Njona were both released on R1,000 bail.

"They were charged for public violence and made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate's Court. They will be appearing again in court on the 25th of May," Naicker said.

All of the suspects arrested following the stadium chaos are due back in court then.  

Naicker says outstanding suspects are being urged to hand themselves over to authorities, saying warrants for their arrests will be issued soon.  

Hundreds of people stormed the pitch after Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-0 to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup semi-final. Security guards were assaulted, stadium infrastructure damaged and TV equipment vandalised

Several fires were also lit in the stands.
