Mtunzini police have arrested two suspects for attempted murder and house robbery after students at the University of Zululand were targeted.
The men have been linked to the robbery of an off-campus student residence in the Khandisa area in KwaDlangezwa.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says gunmen stormed the property on Tuesday night.
"Unknown suspects robbed the students of their cellphones. Upon arrival, a suspected vehicle was spotted and the occupants defied police instructions opting to engage in a gun battle.
"No one was injured during the shootout. A second suspect was also arrested for house robbery and they will appear in court soon."

UniZulu's suspended all academic activities in the wake of the attack.
The students are receiving counselling.
SRC president Siyamukela Khumalo says they've been locked in meetings with the landlords and varsity management to address students' safety concerns.
"We questioned many things that are related to the living conditions for these students. We have taken a decision as SRC is a short-term goal to address the issue of safety and security."
