The Department of Public Works says it's beefed up security at the Durban High Court construction site after it was stormed by armed men.

The group, said to be from a local development forum, forced their way onto the site this week.

It's alleged they stopped workers and chased away contractors in an attempt to gain control of the site.

The department's Thamsanqa Mchunu says police were called and six people were arrested.

Mchunu says such behaviour cannot be tolerated.

"They basically overpowered the security that was there. But for people to just rock up at the construction site and demand to take over the work they haven't put any effort and whose expertise they probably don't have.

"It cannot be acceptable. It is now going to be accepted and the department from now on will use the full might of the law to fight this scourge."

The department says construction will resume on Monday.

The R850 million redevelopment and renovation project started last year in May should be completed in September 2025.

The court has been relocated to the Durban Magistrate's Court.
