Appeal on state capture ruling would be unsuccessful: Analyst

A political analyst feels yesterday's state capture judgement in the North Gauteng High Court has given the ANC an absolute reason to recall President Jacob Zuma.

The High Court dismissed Zuma's State of Capture review application with costs.

It also ruled Zuma must foot the bill in his personal capacity. Analyst, Theo Venter believes the ANC's elective conference this weekend could signal the end of Zuma's presidency.

"I just can't see him continuing under these current conditions. He's now - what I would call - a weakened president. I think today is a victory for democracy and the rule of law. It shows that not only are we as South Africans concerned about state capture but there is a way to resolve all things and the courts are our remedy," he says.

However, Venter says Zuma could still challenge the ruling but feels the chances of success are slim.

"He would just get the same kind of verdict - and part of the costs provided against Zuma was his recklessness in dealing with the law. He got a very apt warning from the judge to say don't try and undermine the rule of law any further," he says.
