Appeal to donors as blood supply reaches critical levels
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
The SA National Blood Service is facing a major stock shortage in KZN.
The service's Sifiso Khoza says the current stock of Group O blood in the province will be depleted by tomorrow morning if more donors do not come forward.
"At the moment, we have 1.8 days cover of Group O. Group O is the universal blood type that can be transfused to anyone in an emergency situation. So we are in dire need of donors to please come forward," he said.

He says this will put many patients at risk, including cancer patients and women who experience difficulties in childbirth and require life-saving blood transfusions.
KZN currently has a blood stock of 200 units of Group O blood instead of the recommended 500 units that should be available everyday.
