Angie Motshekga's 'rape' comment taken out of context says Education Department
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has come under fire for comments she made during a speech at a Pretoria school.
While addressing pupils earlier today, she suggested educated men don’t rape.
When the learners disagreed with what she had stated, she responded that she thought men needed to be a bit civilised not to do certain things.
She went on to tell them her theory was that the more educated you are, the more sophisticated you are, and the less likely you are to do wrong things.
There’s been outrage on social media.

The department has now sent out a statement in which the minister says her comments were taken out of context.
She says she was trying to point out that even men in power can commit gender-based crimes.
She says the department has programmes to educate boys about power relations, patriarchy and toxic masculinity.
