Mbele says the suspect, who has been transferred to KwaMakutha, will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court soon.
Bhengu's murder sparked widespread condemnation, with local groups saying it heightened fears over safety for the LGBTQIA+ community.
The 21-year-old, whose body was discovered on Sunday, had been stabbed. It's believed she had also been raped.
Social Development in KZN has welcomed the arrest.
