Anele Bhengu murder-accused to remain behind bars

The man accused of the murder of KwaMakhutha woman Anele Bhengu wants to apply for bail.

Bhengu's mutilated body was found in the area, south of Durban, two weeks ago.


The 21-year-old had been stabbed in what has been described as a hate crime.


It is alleged that she had also been raped as well as her body mutilated.

The National Prosecuting Authority in KwaZulu-Natal's Natasha Kara says Thulani Nandos Cele appeared briefly in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Monday. 


"He faces charges of murder and assault GBH. The matter was remanded to 30 June 2021 for bail information. The accused will remain in custody." 


Last week, the LGBTQIA+ community said they didn’t feel safe in their neighbourhoods following Bhengu’s killing.
