Around 3 000 supporters joined the march that was bound for the ABSA branch on Anton Lembede Street to ask the bank to pay back the apartheid-era government bail-out.

But some demonstrators instead made their way towards North Beach where a handful of DA supporters who had just finished their march, were assaulted and police had to intervene.

The youth league's Thanduxolo Sabelo says they are not happy with what happened.

"We condemn it with the strongest possible terms. We are not a violent organisation - we are a peaceful organisation and we mean no harm to anyone. The members who were carrying sticks were not instructed by us. We understood that the sticks were not aimed at harming anyone so there's nothing illegal about carrying a stick," he said.

Meanwhile DA KZN leader, Zwakele Mncwango says the league's supporters have violated their constitutional right to march. He says this may have been incited by eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede's remarks.
