The ANC's chairperson in Johannesburg Dada Morero has been elected as the city's new mayor.

His election as first citizen came hours after Mpho Phalatse was ousted by way of a no-confidence motion.
Morero was the only nominated candidate for the position.

"In terms of item 5 of the schedule, if only one candidate has been nominated, the person presiding must declare that candidate elected.
"I hereby declare that councillor Morero has been elected as the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg municipality," Speaker Colleen Makhubele announced.
Addressing the council shortly after his election, Morero said Friday’s council outcomes show what can go wrong when a government fails to service its people.
