Mpho Phalatse 'ousted' as Joburg mayor
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
A motion of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse has been passed at a special council meeting on Friday.
Phalatse has been ousted from her position by a total of 139 votes.
The meeting was convened by newly elected Speaker Colleen Makhubele.
"I will now announce the results and then announce a caucus break for 30 minutes, if the IEC is not here by then we will extend the caucus break by an hour," she said.
"The results are as follows, the 'yes' are 139. There were no nos. The IFP has abstained; therefore the motion is carried and is passed. If the IEC is not here, we will extend it by half an hour to vote in a new mayor."
Before the motion could be passed, the council descended into chaos with the Democratic Alliance (DA) led coalition requesting the speaker to grant them a caucus break.

However, Makhubele did not grant them the request, much to their frustration.
Meanwhile, Phalatse has approached the High Court to declare the special council meeting as invalid, unlawful and null in void.
"In our papers which have been served on the respondents and filed in the High Court that the notices convening the 9th extraordinary meeting of council of 30 September 2022, at 10:00 issued by the speaker of council Colleen Makhubele be declared unlawful, invalid and null and void."
