ANC NEC asks party leaders to draw up list of implicated members

The African National Congress’ (ANC) national executive committee says members who are accused of corruption and other serious crimes will have to step aside from their positions.

The NEC met at the weekend amid reports that its members, including several high-ranking officials, profited from government contracts to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

This has led to rising public anger against the government party, which is accused of allowing its members to profit from people’s misery.

The NEC has now requested the party’s national leaders to draw up a list of cases involving ANC members with recommendations for action to be taken against them.

"The moral standing of the ANC has been severely damaged by the conduct of some of its members – who, in fact, do not deserve to be in our ranks,” ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says.

“We are committed to draw a clear line between our organisation and those who steal from the people, thereby subverting the very essence and reason for the ANC’s existence as a servant of the people.”

Provincial and regional structures have also been ordered to take steps against members and public representatives accused of abusing food parcels and other COVID-19 relief measures.

"The NEC believes that these, and other actions to be led by the National Officials, must show a clear paradigm shift, a sign of determination to rebuild an ethical and people-centred movement, to lead the process of social transformation," added Mabe.
